Water Use and Conservation Update
b
Drought conditions have lessened in the Middle Rio Grande and for the past five months our service area has only been in moderate drought. Water production as of December 31, 2013 was 13.011 billion gallons of surface water, 18.177 billion gallons of ground water and 851 million gallons of reuse water for a total of 32.039 billion gallons. Water use was 2.76 billion gallons lower than the goal for the year.
The bulk of this year's savings came from single family residential customers who used 1,217,246,580 fewer gallons of water in 2013 than in 2012. This is a 7.5% reduction in use. Large turf irrigators also reduced use dramatically using 437,850,776 fewer gallons in 2013 than in 2012, a savings of 15.4%
Based on the Annual Operating Plan (April 2013 - March 2014), the surface water use goal for April - December was 10.103 billion gallons and use was 10.339 billion gallons. The ground water use goal for April - December was 18.798 billion gallons and the use was 15.978 billion gallons. So, the Authority is achieving the goal of maximizing surface water use and preserving the ground water supply.
