Update on Water Authority Activities for the Kirtland Air Force Base Bulk Fuels Facility Spill and US Geological Survey Sentinel Well Drilling Activities

b
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently began the drilling of three sentinel well locations that will be used as early warning wells and are placed at locations where aquifer tests can be performed to better understand how groundwater flows to the Ridgecrest well field.  The sentinel well drilling campaign, which is separate from the corrective action activities occurring for the Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) Bulk Fuels Facility Spill, is being funded by the Air Force Civil Engineering Center.

In addition, Water Authority staff and their environmental consultant, INTERA Inc., have been reviewing the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Facility Investigation Report submitted by the KAFB to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), who will be making a final decision about the report in the near future. Water Authority staff also participated in a recent 3-day meeting with the Air Force Civil Engineering Center (AFCEC), KAFB, and other stakeholders to discuss future interim measure activities to stop the spread of contamination at the KAFB BFF Spill site.

Water Authority staff will continue to monitor the progress of the corrective action activities occurring at the site and the status of the sentinel well drilling campaign, which is expected to be finished by January, 2015.
