Water Authority staff are preparing for another below average runoff forecast and projected average monsoon season this water year. Surface water flows will most likely require the Water Authority to curtail its San Juan-Chama water diversions for up to five months starting in June. As with every year, demand not met by surface water will be served with groundwater. The Water Authority also plans to operate its Large-Scale Aquifer Storage and Recovery project at the Drinking Water Treatment Plant as long as the plant is in operation.
In addition to scheduling releases of its SJC water for DWP operations, the Water Authority will coordinate its SJC water releases to augment flows for recreational rafting on the Rio Chama. In Water 2120, a wide variety of flow conditions were analyzed including the potential for below average runoff conditions as are anticipated this season. In those years, the Water Authority will utilize more ground water which will be offset over a period of years by storing surface water in ASR projects.
