Appointment of Dr. José Cerrato to the Water Protection Advisory Board

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (Water Authority) staff request the appointment of Dr. José Cerrato to the Water Protection Advisory Board (WPAB) to serve a second three-year term as one of two of the Water Authority’s appointees on the board.

 

The purpose of the WPAB is to study and advise the Water Authority, City of Albuquerque (City), and Bernalillo County (County) on surface and groundwater source protection concerns, oversee the implementation of the Rivers and Aquifer Protection Plan (formerly the Water Quality Protection Policy and Action Plan), and assist with the development of strategies necessary to enhance protection of surface and groundwater quality in the Albuquerque Basin.

 

Dr. Cerrato is a Professor of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Director of the UNM METALS Superfund Research Center. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech, Masters in Science (Environmental Engineering) at Virginia Tech, and his Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH). Dr. Cerrato teaches courses on environmental engineering, aquatic chemistry in environmental engineering, and water and sanitation in developing countries. He has participated in a wide variety of research in topics such as impact of metals associated with wildfires on water quality, Native American environmental health equity including work to characterize uranium impacting water quality, and chemical reactions in contaminated waters.
