Status Update for the Kirtland Air Force Base Bulk Fuels Facility Fuel Leak Cleanup

b

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) released their “2016 Strategic Plan” for the Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) Bulk Fuels Facility (BFF) Leak earlier this year, incorporating four strategies to protect the Water Authority’s drinking water supply in the area of the contamination plume. The strategies include implementing a robust monitoring and wellhead protection program, expanded characterization of the light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) plume and contaminated soil, collapsing the dissolved phase plume, and meet or exceed all public involvement requirements.

NMED, the Air Force and other stakeholders and their contractors continue to regularly meet and discuss technical details regarding proposed locations of future extraction wells, groundwater modeling simulations, expanded investigation activities, and pilot studies to address the LNAPL plume.

NMED and the Air Force have lead many informational meetings, field trips and other public engagements since their last presentation to the Water Authority governing board, and continue to look for new opportunities to inform the community on the progress of the BFF Leak cleanup. The Air Force has treated over 70 million gallons of water contaminated by ethylene dibromide since the extraction system was turned on last June.
